Coram Life Education in Hertfordshire

Coram Life Education has been working with Hertfordshire schools over 10 years. Tens of thousands of children and teachers have met Harold-the-giraffe, Nancy and, more recently, Katy, learning about health and wellbeing.

Soon after we expanded from our Essex roots, to become CLE Essex & East Herts, we began to offer schools more than our annual workshops, through developing SCARF - which stands for the values of Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship - which is now a comprehensive, fully-resourced scheme for Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education for 3-11 year-olds and a trusted, popular resource for schools. SCARF means we reach more children across Hertfordshire (and nationally) than we can directly through our educator-led workshops.

The image of SCARF is what inspired this 12-hour February challenge. We often refer to 'wearing our SCARF' - practising the values it represents so children have a tool to support their wellbeing through adolescence, into adulthood. We now hold an annual Wear Your SCARF Day on the last Friday of Children's Mental Health Week, and offer free resources to help schools join in. This year we expanded on the theme of the week - Know Yourself, Grow Yourself... Grow Your SCARF. coramlifeeducation.org.uk/wear-your-scarf-day

One activity suggests children 'grow their scarf' by learning to knit or crochet. This is likely to be a new skill for many children and adults, so we have suggested some YouTube tutorials. We know that learning a new skill and getting creative are helpful for our mental wellbeing.

So, join us! Find a tutorial online. See what you can learn, what you can create, what skills you can share and enjoy. Get some sponsors for the 12 hours and remember, all funds raised are eligible for match funding, so they really make a difference and will help us visit and support more schools with resources, workshops and staff training.

And that's a wrap (up warm in your SCARF!)

With 6 more mini-scarves and the next big one underway, Harold and I have loved every minute of our 12-hour challenge. Though the time challenge is complete, we have plenty more ideas to keep us creating and hope we have inspired others to join us going forward. We hope everyone will share our achievements (that's a SCARF word, you know!) far and wide to encourage donations as well as to spread the word about our work. Are we in your local school yet? If not, please get in touch!

A lunch hour knit, with just a bit of sewing in the ends and stitch to hold it in place left to do - 5 hours to go...

Feb 24, 2025, 6:21:35 PM

Harold (and I) are helping prepare for the introduction of a new early years workshop for nursery age children. The focus is mental wellbeing - particularly resilience - and the pilots have gone down well! We intend to leave a mini-Harold with each nursery we visit, and would love a scarf for each one. So, please knit (crochet, felt, sew - it's up to you!) a mini-scarf (or 12!) for us as part of the February challenge - or any time will do! They need to be approximately 20-25cm long and 2.5cm wide and it would great if they are in SCARF colours (or similar). Check our website to check the colours: https://www.coramlifeeducation.org.uk/scarf . You can send these to us via our main campus: Coram Life Education Coram Community Campus 41 Brunswick Square London WC1N 1AZ . And if you can get someone to sponsor you as well, even better! Maybe you can complete 5 mini-scarves before the end of the week - one in each colour? Or even 12? The one in the photo has 12 rows in each section - we're just loving being one of 12!

A busy half term with knitting and new friends - we're casting on for our last 6 hours...

Feb 24, 2025, 10:25:13 AM

Have you spotted Harold's new friends? We have worked hard to complete a finger-knit in each colour of Harold's SCARF, then moved to creating some mini-scarves for mini-Harolds. Casting on for a new week. Please support us in our next 6 hours of knitting and show us anything you create. Remember, all donations are eligible for match funding, so they make double the difference to our work.

Another hour, another 8.5 to go...

Feb 14, 2025, 11:43:58 AM

Having got the hang of it, Harold and I produced two more finger knits over the course of 60 minutes. Now giving our hands and hooves a little rest, ready for a long and relaxing knit during the half term holidays.

We completed our 1.5 metre scarf and used the remaining wool to create our first finger knitting, seen here as well! We donated the first completed scarf to the school we were visiting in Children's Mental Health week, and have gone on to create more since, which we'll post in the next update!

One hour down, 11 to go

Harold and I have chosen to start with a green scarf, because knitting with a giraffe takes some resilience! An hour has led to good progress already - feeling proud.
